Visitors in and outside the department

 1. Dr. David Li-Bland  (PhD), Professor of Mathematics from University of California Berkeley. He visited the department for three weeks from 16th October 2016 to 4th November 2016. During his visit Dr. Li-Bland taught the Differential Geometry course to the M.Sc. (Mathematics) students. His visit was supported by International Mathematics Union (IMU-VLP), under the Volunteer Lecturer Programme.

2. Prof. Antonella Zanna (PhD), Professor of Mathematics from Universiteti Bergen, Norway. Visited the  department through ISP to evaluate EAUMP network from 21st October 2016 to 24th  Octobert 2016 to.  Her visit was supported by International Science Programmme (ISP) of Sweden.

3.  Prof. Balazs Szendroi (PhD), Professor of Mathematics from St Peter’s College and Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford. Visited the  department through ISP to evaluate EAUMP network from 19th October 2016 to 24th  Octobert 2016 to.  His visit was supported by International Science Programmme (ISP) of Sweden.  During his visit presented a seminar at department to both staff and postgraduate students on 21st October 2016. The theme of seminar was “The geometry and arithmetic of algebraic curves”. This was an introductory to the study of plane curves given by algebraic equations. Discussed both geometric and algebraic aspects, ending with an application in cryptography.

4. Prof. Bengt Ove Turesson and Ms.Theresa Lagali Hensen from Linköping University, Sweden. Visited the department from 5th November 2016 to 7th November December 2016 to participate on the Annual Review Meeting of the Sida Bilateral programme which took place on 7th November 2016 at the university of Dar es Salaam. Prof. Bengt Ove Turesson  is the Swedish coordinator of mathematics projects of University of Dar es Salaam, University of Rwanda and Makerere University. Ms.Theresa Lagali Hensen  is an administrator of the mathematics projects.Their trip supported by Sida Bilateral programme through Sida Mathematics Project.

5. Prof. Mengistu Goa Sangago (PhD), Assistant Professor of Mathematics from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. Visiting lecturer in the department from 23rd November 2016 to 22nd December 2016  for teaching Functional Analysis course for PhD students.  His trip supported by Sida Bilateral programme through Sida Mathematics Project of the University of Dar es Salaam.

6. Dr. Yohannes Tadesse Aklilu from the University of Skövde, Sweden.  Visiting lecturer in the department from 4th December 2016 to 25th December 2016 for teaching Functional Analysis for M.Sc. students. During the visit presented a research seminar to staff and postgraduate students. The title of his talk was Local System Modulues Over Lie Agebroids. His trip supported by Sida Bilateral programme through Sida Mathematics Project of the University of Dar es Salaam.

7. Danny Parsons, Researcher from Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford.  Danny Parsons will visit AIMS – Tanzania in Bagamoyo from 12 December 2016 to 17 December 2016.  During his visit he will present a seminar in our department to both staff and postgraduate students on 16th December 2016. The theme of the seminar is “R-Instat: a new statistics tool for Africa”. During the seminar he will also talk about R-Instat’s applications in a growing number of fields, including climate change and his current project at University of Oxford: Corruption analysis in government contracting.

 8. Dr. Olof  Svensson from department of Science and Technology, Linköping University, Sweden.  The visiting lecturer in the department from  2nd January 2017 to 18th January 2017 and  from 7th March 2017 to 18th March 2017 for teaching Measure Theory and Integration for M.Sc. students.  His trip is supported by the Sida Bilateral programme through Sida Mathematics Project.

9. Prof. Leif Abrahamsson (PhD), the Director of the Programme in Mathematical Sciences at International Science Programme (ISP)Sweden.  Visited the department from 17th January to 20th January 2017 and participated on joint meeting of EAUMP network and Sida Mathematics  Bilateral projects. One of aims of the meeting is to establish cooperation between EAUMP and Sida Bilateral Mathematics projects.

10. Ms. Rebecca Andersson, Project Coordinator at International Science Programme (ISP), Uppsala University, Sweden.  Visited the department from 16th January to 20th January 2017  and participated on joint meeting of EAUMP network and Sida Mathematics  Bilateral projects. One of aims of the meeting is to establish cooperation between EAUMP and Sida Bilateral Mathematics projects.

11. Sylvester Rugeihyamu from UDSM went to Sweden from 1st – 10th March to participate on Annual planning meeting and to attend the First Network meeting between ISP and Sida Mathematics Bilateral projects which held in Stockholm from 7th -8th March 2017.On 9th March participated on EAUMP meeting held at ISP.

12. Shaban Mnyivua from UDSM went to Sweden from 17th  – 9th March has a co-supervisor of two PhD students to discuss on the progress on PhD students and participated on the First Network meeting between ISP and Sida Mathematics Bilateral projects which held in Stockholm from 7th -8th March 2017.

13. Eunice Mureithi from UDSM went to Sweden from  4th – 10th March to participate on Annual planning meeting and to attend the First Network meeting between ISP and Sida Mathematics Bilateral projects which held in Stockholm from 7th -8th March 2017. On 9th March participated on EAUMP meeting held at ISP.

14. Egbert Mujuni from UDSM went to Sweden from 4th  – 10th March has a co-supervisor of one PhD student to discuss on the progress of PhD research and participated on the First Network meeting between ISP and Sida Mathematics Bilateral projects which held in Stockholm from 7th -8th March 2017. On 9th March participated on EAUMP meeting held at ISP.

15. Prof. Toni Beardon from University of Cambridge and African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, visited the department from AIMS Tanzania give a talk on Outreach  activities and presented about the AIMSSEC 3 year research project: Formative Assessment in Science and Mathematics Education (FASMED) involving partners from universities in 7 European countries. Work with teachers informed the development of a toolkit to support teachers in the use of formative assessment in their mathematics and science classrooms.

16. Prof. Alan F. Beardon, retired as professor at  University of Cambridge, visited the department from AIMS Tanzania give a talk about  Complex analysis through hyperbolic geometry. Abstract: At an elementary level, complex analysis is concerned with Euclidean geometry. At an advanced level, Euclidean geometry is almost always replaced by hyperbolic (non-Euclidean) geometry. In this talk we shall explain the reason for this and give some of the important ideas in this area.

 17. Annual Plan meeting was organized from 17th -18th May 2017. The team accompanied by Dr. Inger Lundgren from Swedish Embassy the programmme manager of Birateral projects in Tanzania , Prof. Ernst van Groningen, International Science Programme (ISP), Programme Director Physics from ISP the coordinator of all Bilateral projects in Tanzania.

18. Prof.  Anders Wändahl from Sweden will visit the department from 3th – 10th June 2017. During the visits made presentation for some UDSM staff on how to choose a right Journal for publication from 5th to 8th June, 2017 in an effort to improve quality of publications and visibility. The workshop covered the following aspects: Selecting a Journal where to Publish do it right and avoid pitfalls, Type and Quality of Publication, Verifying Articles, Indicators, Bibliometric Analysis, Ranking, Indexing in databases, Journal Citation reports, Avoid predatory publishers, Characteristics of Predatory Journals, etc. The workshops was supported by Sida Bilateral program.
