The Sida mathematics project it is a five years project targeting  to build capacity for graduate training and research in mathematics at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) through collaboration with Swedish universities.

The capacity for research and teaching on the PhD level will be developed and enhanced by training a number of staff members to the doctoral level. The training will in part be conducted in Sweden in the sandwich mode, but in parallel, a taught PhD programme by coursework and dissertation was developed at the UDSM. This training involve visiting lectures of high calibre academic staff from the Swedish collaborators to Tanzania. The involvement of the Swedish collaborators gives the students a wide chance to interact with international researchers and speed up the graduation rate as well as improving the quality of their theses and publications.

Academic staff from UDSM will also be given the opportunity to gain international experience in teaching and research by visiting Swedish partner universities to interact with the PhD students.

Through this sub-programme, it is expected that 3 PhD scholarships, 3 postdoctoral fellowships, and 8 MSc scholarships in pure mathematics will be awarded in the period 2015-2020.

Through this project expected outputs in the period 2015 to 2020 are 3 PhD graduates, 3 postdoctoral fellowships, and 8 graduates M.Sc. in pure mathematics.

In East Africa the Sida bilateral programme is supporting three mathematics departments of the three  universities namely, University of Rwanda, University of Dar es Salaam and Makerere University.

On the Sida support the three mathematics departments have same objectives and activities. The three departments under the Swedish mathematics coordinator discussed and agreed to collaborate in their activities including collaboration of establishing common Masters and PhD programmes, joint teaching and supervision of PhD students, joint workshops etc.
