The Department of Mathematics is one the oldest departments in the University of Dar es Salaam, opened in July 1965 with 3 teaching staff and a first intake of 14 students. Since then, the activities of the Department have significantly and steadily expanded, passing through a number of important landmarks in the process. Graduates of the department form the bulk of Mathematics teachers in Secondary Schools, Universities and Tertiary institutions in the country. Moreover, many of our graduates are employed in research institutes, financial institutions, education institutions etc.

The Department is responsible for the teaching and research in Mathematics in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS), College of Engineering and Technology (CoET), School of education and College of Information and Communication Technologies (CoICT). The department also runs a degree programme in Actuarial Sciences.

The Department of Mathematics is running four graduate programmes: MSc(Mathematics), MSc(Mathematical Modelling), PhD (Mathematics) and Postgraduate Diploma in Scientific Computing (PGDSS). In addition, the Department conducts short courses in computer packages.
